The month of November is the month in which we intensify our prayers for the dead. In our parish we have the tradition of making an altar dedicated to them. There are envelopes available for people to write down the names of their deceased loved ones. The names on the envelopes are then written in the “Book of the Dead.” The Book is then placed on the altar as a sign of honor for them and a reminder to pray for their souls. Throughout the month of November all those who are written in the book of the dead are remembered in our personal prayer and in our Masses.

The death of a loved one reminds us of our own mortality and that at one point or another, we too will pass from this world to the next. We pray for the dead knowing that someone else will be praying for us when we die. We are one body and we pray for each other. As St Luke says, “He is not God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive” (Lk 20:38). This prayer we make reminds us that we are united with one another and we walk together as a community with Jesus as our head.

Part of our prayers for the dead also include thanking the Lord for all the good experiences we had with them and the blessings that they brought to our lives. We are thankful for their lives as we now pray for the purification of their souls. We pray for all the souls who are in purgatory so that they might be purified quickly and go to enjoy the glory of heaven with God and all the saints.

Let us take this opportunity to pray for all those who have died – especially our family members and our fellow parishioners. May the Lord have mercy on their souls and welcome them home to heaven.

El mes de noviembre es el mes en el que intensificamos nuestras oraciones por los difuntos. En nuestra parroquia tenemos la tradición de dedicarles un altar. Hay sobres disponibles para que las personas escriban los nombres de sus seres queridos fallecidos. Los nombres en los sobres se escriben después en el "Libro de los difuntos". Luego, el Libro se coloca en el altar como un signo de honor para ellos y un recordatorio para orar por sus almas. Durante todo el mes de noviembre todos los que están escritos en el libro de los difuntos son recordados en nuestra oración personal y en nuestras Misas.

La muerte de un ser querido nos recuerda nuestra propia mortalidad y que en algún momento u otro, nosotros también pasaremos de este mundo al siguiente. Oramos por los muertos sabiendo que alguien más orará por nosotros cuando muramos. Somos un cuerpo y oramos los unos por los otros. Como dice San Lucas, “Dios no es un Dios de muertos, sino de vivos, porque para él todos viven” (Lc 20,38). Esta oración que hacemos nos recuerda que estamos unidos unos con otros y caminamos juntos como comunidad con Jesús, nuestra cabeza.

Parte de nuestras oraciones por los difuntos también incluye agradecer al Señor por todas las buenas experiencias que tuvimos con ellos y las bendiciones que trajeron a nuestras vidas. Estamos agradecidos por sus vidas mientras oramos ahora por la purificación de sus almas. Oramos por todas las almas que están en el purgatorio para que se purifiquen rápidamente y vayan a disfrutar de la gloria del cielo con Dios y todos los santos.

Aprovechemos esta oportunidad para orar por todos aquellos que han muerto, especialmente por los miembros de nuestras familias y nuestros compañeros feligreses. Que el Señor tenga misericordia de sus almas y les dé la bienvenida al cielo.
