Without a doubt each one of us wants to be saved and enjoy eternal life. We try to do as many good things as possible to go to heaven, but realize many times how difficult it is to do good. In the gospel this weekend we find a tool that can help us on our way to eternal life with God in heaven. This tool is
simply called, “generosity.”
We know we can struggle with being generous. No matter if we are rich or poor, we can struggle with the tendency of being stingy. Greed can tamp down a desire to be generous, whether we have many possessions or very few.
Jesus expresses his disappointment with the rich young man in our gospel today because he could not bring himself to sell what he possessed. He was too attached. There was some greed in his life. The young man actually left and turned away from Jesus in a spirit of sadness, because he could not detach himself from his wealth.
The key point here is not about being rich or having a great deal of possessions. It is, instead, a need to be detached and to guard against greed. Jesus promises us if we can foster a sense of detachment in our lives, we will experience peace, happiness and the love of God.
Let us pray for that grace - to always be detached from money and possessions so we may follow Jesus wholeheartedly.
