Over the course of the past three weeks I have had the opportunity to spend time with my niece. She travelled all the way from Colima, Mexico. During her visit, we have done many fun activities. Besides my work activities, we have also found time to visit my brothers and their families in Oregon, we went to Portland to celebrate on of my cousin’s wedding, we have been able to visit my friends, etc. In the midst of these activities, we have also had the opportunity to pray together. My hope was to model for her the importance of filling our lives not only with activities, but time to stay quiet and talk to Jesus. According to Jesus, the best part of the day is when we sit down by our Lord to listen to him.
This is the problem that Martha was having in last Sunday’s gospel. Martha is busy working hard and complains about Mary who is not working with her. Mary doesn’t respond, but Jesus says that what Mary is doing is choosing the best part. He says to Martha that she is worried about so many thing and that the best one is to pray.
I think we can learn from Martha and Mary. We cannot just do without listening, as that would be mere busyness. We need both.
Let us take the opportunity to listen to the Lord and be active and productive in this world.
Sincerely,
Rev. Miguel Gonzalez
Sinceramente,
Re. Miguel Gonzalez
