In my last article, I wrote about the statues which have been moved to the front of the church.  In particular, I offered a detailed description of the statue of Saint Ann.  For my article this week, I’d like to write about the other statue that was moved – the statue of Saint Teresa of Lisieux.  Like the statue of Saint Ann, the statue of Saint Teresa is quite old and an important part of the artistic patrimony of Our Lady of the Assumption Parish.   

Both of these statues are meant to inspire us to lead holy lives which will result in one joining these saints in the eternal light and peace of heaven.   Their obedience and witness serve as a guide for our own lives.

In Latin, the word “saint” means someone who has been set apart or is holy.  These women then have been set apart, along with the other saints in heaven, into a great body called the Communion of Saints.  This great crowd of witnesses is an important part of our Catholic Faith.  In fact, each time we recite the creed, we reaffirm our belief in this important body of holy people.   

These holy people have been canonized by the church.  In other words, they are a part of the official “canon” or “list” of those people who are declared as living forever in Heaven.  They get on the list after careful investigation of the work, writings, and other elements of their lives.  They also must have miracles attributed to their intercession.   This process results in them being declared “Blessed” and then later “Saints.”

Saint Teresa of Lisieux was an extremely sensitive person who dedicated herself to prayer and creating a great intimacy with the Lord. Amid her sickness and dark moments, she kept doing the will of God. At the age of 24, she died from tuberculosis. She talked about her life as following the “little way.” She said that we should do small things with great love. She loved flowers and was popularly known as “the little flower.” She was the little flower in the garden of Jesus.

Let us take the opportunity to ask for the prayers of our saints in our Church so that we might be just like them – leading holy lives in love with Jesus.

En mi último artículo, escribí sobre las estatuas que fueron movidas al frente de la Iglesia. En particular, ofrecí una descripción de la estatua de Santa Ana. Para mi artículo de esta semana, me gustaría escribir sobre la otra estatua que movimos: la estatua de Santa Teresa de Lisieux. Al igual que la estatua de Santa Ana, la estatua de Santa Teresa es bastante antigua y es parte importante del patrimonio artístico de la Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción.

Ambas estatuas están destinadas para inspirarnos a llevar una vida santa, lo que resultará en que nos unamos a estos santos en la luz eterna y la paz del cielo. Su obediencia y testimonio sirven de guía para nuestras propias vidas.

En latín, la palabra "santo" significa alguien que ha sido separad. Estas mujeres han sido separadas, junto con los otros santos en el cielo, en un gran grupo llamado la Comunión de los Santos. Esta gran multitud de testigos es una parte importante de nuestra fe católica. De hecho, cada vez que recitamos el credo, reafirmamos nuestra fe en este importante cuerpo de personas santas.

Este pueblo santo ha sido canonizado por la Iglesia. En otras palabras, son parte del “canon” o “lista” oficial de aquellas personas que se declara que viven para siempre en el Cielo. Se incorporan a la lista después de una cuidadosa investigación del trabajo, los escritos y otros elementos de sus vidas. También deben tener milagros atribuidos a su intercesión. Este proceso da como resultado que sean declarados "Beatos" y luego "Santos".

Santa Teresa de Lisieux fue una persona sumamente sensible que se dedicó a la oración y a crear una gran intimidad con el Señor. En medio de su enfermedad y momentos oscuros, siguió haciendo la voluntad de Dios. A los 24 años murió de tuberculosis. Habló de su vida como si estuviera siguiendo el "caminito". Dijo que deberíamos hacer pequeñas cosas con mucho amor. Le encantaban las flores y era conocida popularmente como "la florecita". Ella era la florecita en el jardín de Jesús.

Aprovechemos la oportunidad para orar a nuestros santos en nuestra Iglesia y así podamos ser como ellos, llevando una vida santa en el amor de Jesús.
