From your Pastor…

Every Thursday in our parish we have adoration of the Blessed Sacrament from 12 pm to 5:30 pm. Adoration flows naturally as a consequence of participating in the celebration of the Eucharist. It is in the Eucharist where we best adore the Lord. It is in the Eucharist whereby the ordinary elements of bread and wine are transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit into the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Adoration reminds us of the love Jesus showed to us from the cross and the gift he left for us until the end of time.

The practice of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament may be traced back to 1124 A.D.  Saint Juliana of Mont Cornillon had a great desire for the church to have a feast to celebrate the Blessed Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. And it was in 1247 that the feast was proclaimed by the pope. This feast was celebrated on the third day after the celebration of the solemnity of the Holy Trinity. It is said that in 1263 a priest was celebrating the Holy Eucharist and at the moment of the consecration, blood dripped from the Sacred Host.

In the 14th century, Eucharistic devotion grew and spread in popularity. It was common for Catholics to participate as an expression of belief in the Real Presence of Jesus Christ. Today, in the United States and other countries, this celebration of Corpus Christi was moved to Sunday. This is why we come together as the church at our Lady of the Assumption in procession and song as we adore the Body of Christ.

Let’s pray that we may always adore the Blessed Sacrament by being purified before we take communion and by spending time before the exposed Blessed Sacrament every Thursday.

Todos los jueves tenemos adoración al Santísimo Sacramento en nuestra parroquia de 12 pm a 5:30 pm. La adoración fluye naturalmente como consecuencia de la participación en la celebración de la Eucaristía. Es en la Eucaristía donde mejor adoramos al Señor. Es en la Eucaristía donde los elementos ordinarios del pan y el vino son transformados por el poder del Espíritu Santo en el cuerpo, la sangre, el alma y la divinidad de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo. La adoración nos recuerda el amor que Jesús nos mostró desde la cruz y el don que nos dejó hasta el final de los tiempos.

La práctica de la Adoración al Santísimo Sacramento se remonta al año 1124 d.C. Santa Juliana de Mount Cornillon tenía un gran deseo de que la Iglesia tuviera una fiesta para celebrar el Santísimo Sacramento de la sagrada Eucaristía. Y fue en 1247 que la fiesta fue proclamada por el Papa. Esta fiesta se celebraba al tercer día después de la celebración de la solemnidad de la Santísima Trinidad. Se dice que en 1263 un sacerdote estaba celebrando la sagrada Eucaristía y en el momento de la consagración goteaba sangre de la Sagrada Hostia.

En el siglo XIV, la devoción eucarística creció y se extendió en popularidad. Era común que los católicos participaran como una expresión de creencia en la Presencia Real de Jesucristo. Hoy, en Estados Unidos y otros países, esta celebración del Corpus Christi fue trasladada al domingo. Es por eso que nos reunimos como Iglesia en nuestra Señora de la Asunción en procesión y canto mientras adoramos el Cuerpo de Cristo.

Oremos para que siempre podamos adorar al Santísimo Sacramento siendo purificados antes de comulgar y dedicando tiempo ante el Santísimo Sacramento expuesto todos los jueves.
