From your Pastor…

“I thirst” (Mt 5:6). This is one of the last words we hear from Jesus in the gospel when he was on the Cross. Jesus was asking for water; He was dehydrated after the agony in the garden as well as the carrying the cross from Jerusalem to the outside of the city under the heat of the sun. When he said he was thirsty he was given a sponge with vinegar. In this cry Jesus expresses a great longing for our love even when we are sinners, He waits for us to come back fully to him: in heart, mind and spirit.

This is why we need to retreat from the world once in a while. We have to rest awhile.  This is an important formula to help avoid burnout, fatigue, and a luke-warm spiritual life.  Retreats give us a renewed capacity for ministry such that our minds are clearer and our hearts are filled once again with joy and enthusiasm.  Jesus himself was very active in the world – teaching, preaching and healing but he was also carried to get away to a quiet place and pray.  He himself took a break at times.   

Jesus models for us the way we should go about life. We should live filled with energy to fulfill our responsibilities while finding a sense of peace in God at the same time.   Jesus says in Mt 11:28-30, “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”

This coming week all the priests of the Diocese of Yakima will be on retreat.  From Monday through Friday, we will strive to find the peace which only the Lord has the power to offer. This retreat will take place at the Archbishop Brunett Retreat Center at the Palisades in Federal Way, Washington. Fr. Bill Watson S.J. will be a retreat director. He works at the Jesuit High School in Portland, Oregon. He develops Ignatian Programs. He has a Masters in Divinity from Weston School of Theology and a Doctorate in Ministry from The Catholic University of America. 

Please, pray for us as we come together and retreat to pray and celebrate as your priests.

De parte de su Pastor…       

“Tengo sed” (Mateo 5,6). Esta es una de las últimas palabras que escuchamos de Jesús en el evangelio cuando estaba en la Cruz. Jesús estaba pidiendo agua; Estaba deshidratado después de la agonía en el jardín y de llevar la cruz desde Jerusalén hasta las afueras de la ciudad bajo el calor del sol. Cuando dijo que tenía sed le dieron una esponja con vinagre. En este grito Jesús expresa un gran anhelo por nuestro amor aun cuando somos pecadores, Él espera que volvamos plenamente a él: en corazón, mente y espíritu.

Es por eso que necesitamos retirarnos del mundo de vez en cuando. Tenemos que descansar. Esta es una fórmula importante para ayudar a evitar el agotamiento, la fatiga y una vida espiritual tibia. Los retiros nos dan una capacidad renovada para el ministerio, de modo que nuestras mentes están más claras y nuestros corazones se llenan una vez más de alegría y entusiasmo. Jesús mismo estuvo muy activo en el mundo – enseñando, predicando y curando, pero también fue llevado a un lugar tranquilo a orar. Él mismo tomó descansos.

Jesús nos modela la forma en que debemos vivir la vida. Debemos vivir llenos de energía para cumplir con nuestras responsabilidades y al mismo tiempo encontrar un sentido de paz en Dios. Jesús dice en Mateo 11:28-30: “Vengan a mí los que van cansados, llevando pesadas cargas, y yo los aliviaré. Carguen con mi yugo y aprendan de mí, que soy paciente y humilde de corazón, y sus almas encontrarán descanso. Pues mi yugo es suave y mi carga liviana”.

Esta próxima semana todos los sacerdotes de la Diócesis de Yakima estarán de retiro. De lunes a viernes, nos esforzaremos por encontrar la paz que solo el Señor tiene el poder de ofrecer. Este retiro tendrá lugar en el Centro de Retiros Archbishop Brunett en Palisades en Federal Way, Washington. Padre Bill Watson SJ será un director del retiro. Trabaja en la Escuela Secundaria Jesuita en Portland, Oregón. Desarrolla Programas Ignacianos. Tiene una Maestría en Divinidad de la Escuela de Teología de Weston y un Doctorado en Ministerio de la Universidad Católica de América.
