VADEMECUM is a small manual or a document that provides guidance for consultation on a particular topic.  Our Holy Father has released a Vademecum to guide us in our preparation for the synod in 2023. “For a synodal Church” is the initiative of Pope Francis. He is our spiritual leader and is looking for ways where we can walk, in greater communion, participation and mission. This is not only about the current needs of the Church but a way to discover what the will of God is for the Church in the future.   

This document is a tool filled with questions that will help us to consult and listen to one another – the People of God - in our dioceses. VADEMECUM outlines 10 topics which focus on different areas which can help us to walk together as a local Church and with the Church throughout the world. It is important to note that the questions contained in the document are not for Catholics alone.  They are meant to also include the marginalized, those who have left the Church, our Protestant brothers and sisters, and those who feel they do not have any say in the Catholic Church.

The questions contained in the VADEMECUM will facilitate reflections on what is going well and what are we not addressing as a Church.  The idea would be to surface how we might improve under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.  A sample of the kinds of questions being asked are: How are the laity listened to, especially women and young people? When and how do we manage to say what is important to us? How do prayer and liturgical celebrations actually inspire and guide our common life and mission in our community? What areas of the mission are we neglecting? How is authority or governance exercised within our local Church?

All these questions will help us to walk together with the objective of fulfilling the mission of Jesus in this world. At the end of each consultation, we will make a synthesis of what has been said. The conferences of bishops will offer these syntheses at the synod in October 2023.

VADEMECUM es un pequeño manual o documento que sirve de guía para la consulta sobre un tema en particular. Nuestro Santo Padre ha publicado un Vademecum para guiarnos en nuestra preparación para el sínodo de 2023. “Por una Iglesia sinodal” es la iniciativa del Papa Francisco. Él es nuestro líder espiritual y está buscando caminos por donde podamos caminar, con mayor comunión, participación y misión. No se trata solo de las necesidades actuales de la Iglesia, sino de descubrir cuál es la voluntad de Dios para la Iglesia en el futuro.

Este documento es una herramienta llena de preguntas que nos ayudarán a consultarnos y escucharnos unos a otros, el Pueblo de Dios, en nuestras diócesis. VADEMECUM esboza 10 temas que se enfocan en diferentes áreas que nos pueden ayudar a caminar juntos como Iglesia local y con la Iglesia en todo el mundo. Es importante señalar que las preguntas contenidas en el documento no son solo para católicos. Están destinadas a incluir también a los marginados a aquellos que han dejado la Iglesia a nuestros hermanos y hermanas protestantes, y a aquellos que sienten que no tienen nada que decir en la Iglesia Católica.

Las preguntas contenidas en el VADEMECUM facilitarán la reflexión sobre lo que va bien y lo que no estamos abordando como Iglesia. La idea sería sacar a la luz la manera de cómo podemos mejorar bajo la guía del Espíritu Santo. Una muestra del tipo de preguntas que se hacen son: ¿Cómo se escucha a los laicos, especialmente a las mujeres y los jóvenes? ¿Cuándo y cómo logramos decir lo que es importante para nosotros? ¿Cómo inspiran y guían realmente la oración y las celebraciones litúrgicas nuestra vida común y nuestra misión en nuestra comunidad? ¿Qué áreas de la misión estamos descuidando? ¿Cómo se ejerce la autoridad o el gobierno dentro de nuestra Iglesia local?

Todas estas preguntas nos ayudarán a caminar juntos con el objetivo de cumplir la misión de Jesús en este mundo. Al final de cada consulta, haremos una síntesis de lo dicho. Las conferencias de obispos ofrecerán estas síntesis en el sínodo de octubre de 2023.
