Today is traditionally known as “Laetare Sunday.”  The word “laetare” is Latin for the word “rejoice.”  The word is used by the prophet Isaiah when he proclaims: “Rejoice, Jerusalem, and all who love her. Be joyful, all who were in mourning; exalt and be satisfied at her consoling breast” (66:10-11).  We rejoice this 4th Sunday of Lent for the upcoming Feast of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.   This is a weekend where the liturgy calls us to be joyful.  The thought of Easter, just around the corner, gives us hope and lifts our spirits.   

The paradox of the Christian life is such that we find joy, peace, and resurrection through the Cross.  The fasting, penance, and sacrifice of these days of Lent give us hope and lift up our spirits to continue our Journey until the day of Easter. We remember that the way to rise with Jesus is through the Cross.

Laetare Sunday reminds us of the need to strive for joy even in the midst of the pandemic and other sufferings we encounter.  God does not let evil have the final word in our lives.  In His own way, and on His own time, God always brings goodness and healing out of evil and suffering.  This is the source of our joy – even when we are in the middle of some difficulty or even when we are in the middle of a great tragedy.    

Joy is also a gift of the Holy Spirit. When we rely on the presence of God we act under his influence and reveal a joy that cannot be defined.  It is instead expressed in the manner in which we live our lives.

Psalm 33:1 says, “Shout for joy in the Lord, O you righteous! Praise befits the upright.” Let us rejoice in the Lord always and have confidence and his promise to rise with Him on the last day.

Hoy se conoce tradicionalmente como "Domingo de Laetare". La palabra "laetare" en latín significa "regocijarse". La palabra la usa el profeta Isaías cuando proclama: “Alégrate, Jerusalén, y todos los que la aman. Alégrense todos los que estaban de luto; ensalzaos y saciaos de su consolador pecho” (66: 10-11). Nos regocijamos este cuarto domingo de Cuaresma por la próxima Fiesta de la Resurrección de Jesucristo de entre los muertos. Este es un fin de semana donde la liturgia nos llama a la alegría. El pensar que la Pascua ya está a la vuelta de la esquina, nos da esperanza y nos levanta el ánimo.

La paradoja de la vida cristiana es tal que encontramos alegría, paz y resurrección a través de la Cruz. El ayuno, la penitencia y el sacrificio de estos días de Cuaresma nos dan esperanza y nos levantan el ánimo para continuar nuestro Camino hasta el día de Pascua. Recordamos que el camino para resucitar con Jesús es a través de la Cruz.

El domingo de Laetare nos recuerda la necesidad de luchar por la alegría incluso en medio de la pandemia y otros sufrimientos que encontramos. Dios no permite que el mal tenga la última palabra en nuestras vidas. A Su propia manera y en Su propio tiempo, Dios siempre trae bondad y sanación del mal y el sufrimiento. Ésta es la fuente de nuestra alegría, incluso cuando estamos en medio de alguna dificultad o incluso cuando estamos en medio de una gran tragedia.

La alegría también es un don del Espíritu Santo. Cuando confiamos en la presencia de Dios actuamos bajo su influencia y revelamos un gozo que no se puede definir. Este cambio es expresado en la forma en que vivimos nuestras vidas.

El Salmo 33:1 dice: “¡Cantad con júbilo en el Señor, justos! La alabanza es digna de los rectos". Regocijémonos en el Señor siempre y tengamos confianza en su promesa de resucitar con Él en el último día.
