This weekend we will mark the beginning of our new liturgical year with the celebration of the First Sunday of Advent. Advent comes from the Latin word “adventus” which means “coming” and thus we use this season to help us prepare for the coming of Jesus at Christmas. There are four weeks in Advent. These four weeks give us the opportunity to increase our prayer, sacrifices, and service of others as we anticipate the Messiah’s coming. 

The very first words we hear in our gospel for the First Sunday of Advent are: “Be watchful! Be alert!”  We are called to live our lives during these weeks in such a way that we are ready to meet the Lord. 

Two central figures during Advent are the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist. Both of these people are models for us of patient waiting and attentiveness to the will of God. 

Our Advent gospel this Sunday ends with a command from Jesus: “what I say to you, I say to all, ‘watch’.” The Lord is telling us that we should not have a passive attitude but rather an active role in becoming who we are called to be. Advent challenges us to deliber-ately make changes in our lives and thus see the Lord’s presence more clearly around us and be prepared for that time when he comes again.

Este fin de semana marca el comienzo de nuestro nuevo an o litúrgico con la celebración del Primer Domingo de Adviento. Adviento proviene de la palabra latina "adventus" que significa "venir" y, por lo tanto, usamos esta temporada para ayudar a prepararnos para la ve-nida de Jesu s en Navidad. Hay cuatro semanas en Ad-viento. Estas cuatro semanas nos dan la oportunidad de aumentar nuestras oraciones, sacrificios y servicio a los demás mientras anticipamos la venida del Mesí as. 

Las primeras palabras que escuchamos en nuestro evangelio para el primer domingo de Adviento son: "¡Estén atentos! ¡Esten alerta! "Estamos llamados a vivir nuestras vidas durante estas semanas en preparación para entrarnos con el Señor. 

Dos figuras centrales durante el Adviento son la Santí sima Virgen María y San Juan Bautista. Ambas personas son modelos para nosotros de paciente espera y atención a la voluntad de Dios. 

Nuestro evangelio de Adviento este domingo termina con una orden de Jesús: "lo que les digo a ustedes, les digo a todos, “Esten en vela”." El Señor nos está diciendo que no debemos tener una actitud pasiva sino más bien un rol activo para ser quienes estamos llamados a ser. El Adviento nos desafía a hacer cambios deliberadamente en nuestras vidas y así ver la presencia del Señor más claramente a nuestro alrededor y estar preparados para ese momento cuando él vuelva.
