On Monday (May 4) and Tuesday (May 5) between 10 am and 1 pm in Leavenworth.
Please drive by the Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Leavenworth at 145 Wheeler Street, to sign the R-90 petition to reject recent Wash. Sex Ed Law.
We will be in the parking lot and keeping safe social distancing. You can just drive up to a table, sign the petition, and be on your way in a minute. Hand sanitizer will be available. I good idea is to bring your own pen!
Our Bishop Joseph Tyson, together with the other Catholic bishops in Washington, have given their support and encouragement to gathering signatures for R-90.
Please read the complete letter from the bishops here who oppose the new Sex Ed law for the following reasons:
CSHE( Comprehensive Sexual Health Education) prevents locally elected school boards from fully determining their own policy in this sensitive area. The law does not allow local communities to protect their own values. The Catholic principle of subsidiarity holds that certain issues are best dealt with locally. The sensitive matter of sex education is one such example of the appropriateness of handling some governmental issues at the local level.
The CSHE law does not ensure meaningful curricula review by parents and guardians nor provide for public comment prior to implementation. Additionally, the CSHE curriculum fails to adequately address complex moral issues tied to human sexuality. As the bishops of the Second Vatican Council taught, the “family is a kind of school of deeper humanity ... the right of parents to ... educate their children in the bosom of the family must be safeguarded.” Gaudium ed Spes, The Pastoral Constitution of the Church in the Modern World, no. 52.
Joining Forces with other Christians
We are joining other concerned Christian citizens to stop the SB5395 initiative that mandates Comprehensive Sex Education (CSE) for our K-12 students in public schools. This bill was passed by our State Legislature and signed into law by Governor Inslee. Referendum 90, seeks to gain enough signatures to challenge this law and get it on the ballot where citizens can vote their conscience.
CSE will require ongoing sexual education starting in Kindergarten. While the proposed education beginning at Kindergarten may appear harmless, it opens the door to robbing our children of their innocence – undermining traditional values while simultaneously preparing them for a progressive agenda of redefined morals and methods in sexuality.
