On this day, Sunday, April 22nd, the Church observes World Day of Prayer for vocations. Today is also known as "Good Shepherd Sunday" because of the gospel we hear at Mass from Saint John. In this passage, our Lord proclaims, "I am the good shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I will lay down my life for the sheep."

The purpose of this day is to publicly fulfill the Lord's command for us to, "Pray the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest" (Mt 9:38; Lk 10:2). At all Masses this weekend we will be praying for an increase in laborers for the harvest. In particular, we will be praying that that young men and women will able to hear and respond generously to the Lord's call to priesthood and consecrated life.

Many priests can point to individuals who encouraged them to think about their vocation early in life. If you see a young man in Our Lady of the  Assumption Parish whom you think God might be calling, just tell him. Ask him to be open to the idea of priesthood and to pray that he discovers God's will. Remind him that following God's will is the best way to find happiness in this life and in the life to come.

May all our prayers send many laborers into the Lord's harvest.

En este día, domingo, 22 de abril, la Iglesia observa el Día Mundial de Oración por las vocaciones. Hoy también se lo conoce como "Domingo del Buen Pastor" debido al evangelio de San Juan que escuchamos en la Misa. En este pasaje, nuestro Señor proclama: "Yo soy el buen pastor, porque conozco a mis ovejas, y ellas me conocen a mí, así como el Padre me conoce a mí y yo conozco al Padre."

El propósito de este día es cumplir públicamente el mandato del Señor de que "Oremos al Señor de la mies para que envíe obreros a su cosecha" (Mt 9:38; Lc 10: 2). En todas las Misas de este fin de semana estaremos orando por un aumento de trabajadores para la cosecha. En particular, rezaremos para que los hombres y mujeres jóvenes puedan escuchar y responder generosamente al llamado del Señor al sacerdocio y la vida consagrada.

Muchos sacerdotes pueden señalar a personas que los animaron a pensar sobre su vocación temprano en la vida. Si ves a un joven en nuestra Parroquia de la Asunción a quien crees que Dios podría estar llamando, solo díselo. Pídele que se abra a la idea del sacerdocio y ore para que descubra la voluntad de Dios. Recuérdele que seguir la voluntad de Dios es la mejor manera de encontrar la felicidad en esta vida y en la vida venidera.

Que a través de nuestras oraciones el senor envié trabajadores a la cosecha.
