Did he abandon us? Do we currently feel this way? We may feel as if we are walking all alone in the middle of nowhere. When will the spread of this virus stop? In times like these, we are reminded that we do not always have any control over our lives. When we are unable to fix something or someone we are called to turn to God and ask for His help.

The disciples felt something similar when their boat was being tossed about in the sea. “They came and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!” There are moments in our lives like this one, when we would love to have a deeper faith on which to rely. We know from our tradition, though, that faith deepens when we practice the virtues of generosity, of mercy, of forgiveness, of charity, etc. If life is lived out this way, then we can expect a deeper faith and greater trust in the ability to abandon ourselves into the hands of the Lord - “thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven…”

Just as we are called to practice “social distancing” at this time, perhaps we can use this as an opportunity to draw even closer to God. As we detach from the world, we go to our inner room by ourselves as Jesus says, “go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.”

This year Lent is especially challenging. We are called to grow closer to the Lord and yet we cannot gather to be nourished by the Body and Blood of Jesus. It reminds me of the passage from scripture where Jesus says: “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.” Without the Mass, our bodies and souls hunger for the Lord to come back to us.

Let us pray and fast for an end to this pandemic. Pray for scientists, doctors, nurses, health officials, and caregivers that the Lord may help them to find an answer to this pandemic. May the Lord be their guide and resource for a quick cure to this tragedy. May the Lord be our consolation and our strength. May He show us the way to live a life of faith and trust in Him.

My heart is with all those who are greatly suffering because of the inability to participate in the Mass and all who are suffering the consequences of this awful virus.

¿Nos abandonó? ¿Actualmente nos sentimos así ? Podemos sentir como si estuviéramos caminando solos en medio de la nada. ¿Cuándo se detendrá la propagación de este virus? En momentos como estos, se nos recuerda que no siempre tenemos control sobre nuestras vidas. Cuando no podemos cambiar algo o alguien, estamos llamados a recurrir a Dios y pedirle su ayuda.

Los discípulos sintieron algo similar cuando su barco fue arrojado al mar. "Ellos vinieron y lo despertaron, diciendo: "¡Señor, sálvanos! ¡Estamos pereciendo!  Hay momentos en nuestras vidas como este, en los que nos encantarí a tener una fe más profunda en la cual que confiar. Sin embargo, sabemos por nuestra tradición que nuestra fe se profundiza cuando practicamos la generosidad, la misericordia, el perdón, la caridad, etc. Si la vida se vive de esta manera, entonces podemos esperar una fe más profunda y una mayor confianza en la capacidad de abandonarnos en las manos del Señor: "Hágase tu voluntad en la tierra como en el cielo ..."

Así como estamos llamados a practicar el "distanciamiento social" en este momento, quizás podamos usar esto como una oportunidad para acercarnos aún más a Dios. A medida que nos separamos del mundo, vayamos solos al interior de nuestra habitación como dice Jesús: “Entra a tu cuarto, cierra la puerta y ora a tu Padre que está allí, a solas contigo. Y tu Padre, que te ve en lo secreto, te premiara".

Este año la Cuaresma es especialmente desafiante. Estamos llamados a acercarnos al Señor y, sin embargo, no podemos reunirnos para alimentarnos con el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Jesús. Me recuerda el pasaje de las Escrituras donde Jesús dice: “¿Quieren ustedes que los compañeros del novio estén de duelo mientras el novio está con ellos? Llegará el tiempo en que el novio les será quitado y entonces ayunarán”. Sin la Misa, nuestros cuerpos y almas tienen hambre de que el Señor regrese a nosotros." 

Oremos y ayunemos por el fin de esta pandemia. Oremos por los científicos, los médicos, las enfermeras, los funcionarios de salud y los que están al cuidado de los enfermos para que el Señor pueda ayudarlos a encontrar una respuesta a esta pandemia. Que el Señor sea su guí a y recurso para una cura rápida de esta tragedia. Que el Señor sea nuestro consuelo y nuestra fuerza. Que nos muestre el camino para vivir una vida de fe y confianza en Él.

Mi corazón esta con todos ustedes por la tristeza de no poder participar en la Misa y con todos los que sufren las consecuencias de este terrible virus.
