Last week we heard about the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. This powerful miracle inspired people to follow Jesus. They wanted to see what else he might do for them. Jesus responds this week by saying, “you are looking for me because of the signs you have seen.” Jesus doesn’t want them to follow him for his earthly miracles that satisfy their earthly needs. Rather he wants them to focus on miracles that refer to eternal life.

To this end, Jesus reminds his followers that the bread which Moses gave to them was temporary. It only satisfied them temporarily. In contrast, he desires to feed them with the true Bread from Heaven. Eating this Bread means they will never hunger again. The Jews are excited about this possibility and say to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.”

The reality is that Jesus has indeed given us this Bread always. Each and every time we attend Holy Mass and receive his body in the Eucharist, we are receiving the Bread he spoke of two thousand years ago. This Bread is not meant to satisfy our physical hunger. Rather, the purpose of this Bread is to satisfy our deepest spiritual hunger – things like a hunger for peace, meaning in life, forgiveness, and unconditional love. Too many people hunger for happiness in all the wrong places. Our true source of happiness is Jesus Christ and we have the opportunity for deep communion with him each and every time we receive Holy Communion.

May we always have a deep sense of gratitude for the true Bread of Life.

La semana pasada escuchamos sobre el milagro de la multiplicación de los panes y los peces. Este poderoso milagro inspiro a las personas a seguir a Jesús. Querían ver qué más podría hacer por ellos. Jesús responde esta semana diciendo, "me están buscando por haber visto señales milagrosas". Jesús no quiere que lo sigan por sus milagros terrenales que satisfacen sus necesidades terrenales. Por el contrario, quiere que se centren en los milagros que se refieren a la vida eterna.

Con este fin, Jesús les recuerda a sus seguidores que el pan que Moisés les dio fue temporal. Solo los satisfizo temporalmente. Por el contrario, el desea alimentarlos con el verdadero Pan del Cielo. Comer este pan significa que nunca más volveran a tener hambre. Los judíos estan entusiasmados con esta posibilidad y le dicen: "Señor, danos este pan siempre".

La realidad es que Jesús nos ha dado este Pan siempre. Cada vez que asistimos a la Santa Misa y recibimos su cuerpo en la Eucaristía, recibimos el Pan del que habló hace dos mil años. Este pan no está destinado a satisfacer nuestra hambre física. Por el contrario, el objetivo de este pan es satisfacer nuestra hambre espiritual más profunda: cosas como el hambre de paz, el sentido de la vida, el perdón y el amor incondicional. Demasiadas personas tienen hambre de felicidad en todos los lugares equivocados. Nuestra verdadera fuente de felicidad es Jesucristo y tenemos la oportunidad de una profunda comunion con él cada vez que recibimos la Sagrada Comunión.

Que siempre tengamos un profundo sentido de gratitud por el verdadero Pan de Vida.
