Lent comes to us this week. This sacred time of preparing to celebrate the glory of the resurrection begins on Wednesday as we are smudged with blessed ashes. Ash Wednesday begins 40 days of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. The number “40” reminds us of the 40 years that the Jewish people were in the desert before they arrived to the promised land. “40” also reminds us of the 40 days Jesus spent in the desert before he began his mission.

Every great event requires preparation. Jesus himself prepares for his journey to Jerusalem by teaching and preaching the gospel of salvation to all people. Easter is a great event which requires us to prepare. During these days, we will walk along the same path of Jesus. Through prayer, fasting, and the giving of alms, we share in the passion of the Lord. Self-imposed sacrifice gives the opportunity to deepen our faith and lead us to a greater sense of peace.

This season of penance and sacrifice is reflected in the liturgy of the Church. We don’t use holy water or flowers. We refrain from singing both the Gloria and the Alleluia. The color used at Mass is a simple purple. All of these help us to embrace this season of austerity and focus intently on our relationship with God.

La Cuaresma ya comienza esta semana. Este tiempo sagrado de preparacion para celebrar la gloria de la resurreccion empieza el miercoles, con la imposicion de cenizas benditas. Con el Miercoles de Ceniza iniciamos 40 días de oracion, ayuno y limosna. El numero "40" nos recuerda los 40 anos que los judíos pasaron en el desierto antes de llegar a la tierra prometida. "40" tambien nos recuerda los 40 días que Jesus paso en el desierto antes de comenzar su mision.

Todo gran evento requiere preparacion. Jesús mismo se prepara para su viaje a Jerusalen ensenando y predicando el evangelio de la salvacion a todas las personas. La Pascua es un gran evento que requiere que nos preparemos. Durante estos días, caminaremos por el mismo sendero de Jesus. A traves de la oracion, el ayuno y la limosna, compartimos la pasion del Señor. El sacrificio autoimpuesto brinda la oportunidad de profundizar en nuestra fe y llevarnos a un mayor sentido de paz.

Esta epoca de penitencia y sacrificio se refleja en la liturgia de la Iglesia. No usamos agua bendita ni flores. Nos abstenemos de cantar tanto el Gloria como el Aleluya. El color utilizado en la misa es un simple purpura. Todo esto nos ayuda a abrazar esta temporada de austeridad y a enfocarnos atentamente en nuestra relacion con Dios.
