Being tested is never enjoyable. Before a test we often get nervous, a little queasy in the stomach and anxious. We really don’t like to be tested.

Even though it is not our favorite thing, there are many times in life that we face tests. We get tested by our teacher to see how much we have learned, when we are examined by a doctor in the midst of illness, and when we interview for a job. As difficult as these may be, one of the scariest tests we may face is when we are tested by God.

In our first reading for this Second Sunday of Lent, Abraham and Sara are tested by their old age until one day Sara gets pregnant with her son Isaac. They received their child with joy and thankful to God for the opportunity to be parents and to form a family. They are tested once again when the Lord tests Abraham’s faith and trust in God. He asks him to offer his son in sacrifice to him. Abraham doesn’t doubt and attempts to fulfill God’s commandment. Just before Abraham sacrifices his only son, the angel of the Lord stops the sacrifice and the Lord admires the total trust and faith that Abraham expressed. Abraham passed the test.

Lent is a time for fasting, prayer and almsgiving. In this time, we will be tested such that we are tempted not to follow these practices. Or there may be times when we are tempted to give up altogether. Dedication to the three traditional practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving help us to be detached from the things of this world. When done faithfully, they can give us the strength we need to pass any test that is placed before us.

Ser probado nunca es agradable. Antes de una prueba, a menudo nos ponemos nerviosos, un poco enfermos del estómago y ansiosos. Realmente no nos gusta que nos pongan a prueba.

Aunque no es de nuestras cosas favoritas, hay muchas veces en la vida que enfrentamos pruebas. Cuando nuestros profesores nos hacen pruebas para ver cuánto hemos aprendido, cuando un médico nos examina en medio de una enfermedad y cuando nos entrevistan para un trabajo. A pesar de lo difícil que puede ser, una de las pruebas más atemorizantes que podemos enfrentar es cuando Dios nos pone a prueba.

En nuestra primera lectura de este segundo domingo de Cuaresma, Abraham y Sara son probados por su vejez hasta que un día Sara queda embarazada de su hijo Isaac. Recibieron a su hijo con alegría y agradecidos a Dios por la oportunidad de ser padres y formar una familia. Son probados una vez más cuando el Señor prueba la fe de Abraham y confianza en Dios. Él le pide que le ofrezca a su hijo en sacrificio. Abraham no duda e intenta cumplir el mandamiento de Dios. Justo antes de que Abraham sacrifique a su unico hijo, el angel del Señor detiene el sacrificio y el Señor admira la total confianza y fe que Abraham expresa. Abraham paso la prueba.

La Cuaresma es un tiempo de ayuno, oración y caridad. En este momento, seremos probados de manera que tengamos la tentación de no seguir estas practicas. O puede haber momentos en los que estamos tentados a renunciar por completo. La dedicación a las tres prácticas tradicionales de oración, ayuno y caridad nos ayuda a separarnos de las cosas de este mundo. Cuando se hace fielmente, pueden darnos la fortaleza que necesitamos para pasar cualquier prueba que se nos presente.

Espero que pases todas las pruebas que enfrentas durante este tiempo sagrado de la Cuaresma.
